The making of digital maps

Bookmark and Share
Always wanted to know how the digital maps of your TomTom are made? We were invited by TeleAtlas, the company who manufactures the digital maps, to experience the process of creating the digital maps. Actually it’s pretty simple: get in a camper equipped with 6 cameras and drive 800 km a day. Each of the cameras makes 3 photos per second. These data are stored in a computer with a GPS-receiver. This computer knows the exact location of the camper and through this way the road maps and about 18 million Points of Interests are being processed.
